Generally, twelve interchanges are allowed in any game from each team, although in the National Rugby League, this was reduced to ten prior to the 2008 season.
It is due to start its first professional season in 2010, with a hope of tapping into the country's already well-established support for American football, which is generally similar to rugby league in principle.
