It is characterised by a gritty production style, that has a in inner-city feel to it. The breaks are less cut-up sounding than old school jungle, and harder, hence the name hardstep. The genre found favour of junglists, despite being overtaken in popularity by techstep, the fans still remain fans of the style. One characteristic is an accentuated, yet sparse percussive beat.
