Armstrong. His first meeting with him began in 1949, when the young actor was one of Griffith's and his first wife's students at University of North Carolina, where he majored in Drama, and became a versatile character actor (second only to his teacher), after graduation from college, while attending Actors' Studio. In the 1960s, he was also reunited with his teacher on an episode of his teacher's first series, The Andy Griffith Show , playing a farmer, who was also a tomboy. In the 1980s, he also guest-starred on a 2-pt. episode of his teacher's second series, Matlock , which was filmed in Manteo, North Carolina (which is actually Griffith's place of residence), playing the role of a sheriff, prior to introducing Andy's character to a young, hotshot private investigator, midway throughout the episode. He keeps in touch with Griffith, by telephone or by mail, about his own retirement.
